Interview of Fanis Katechos at Theatermag

Fanis Katechos, one of the founding members of the multiactive Art Group Fabrica Athens, talks to theatermag about the group’s actions in the midst of mandatory confinement. The second part of the SabarBar action continues, the online meetings – lessons in penitentiaries and much more.
Would you like to tell us about the Fabrica Athens Art Group?

Fabrica Athens is an independent self-managed Theatrical Organization that has tried, is trying and will try to take art into its own hands. To treat art with care, to respect art, to create conditions for the group itself, but also for other independent artists to make their dreams come true. We are interested in researching and reaching the root of the sources of art and creating suitable grounds for inspiration and creation. The group has a social status and through its art wants to give social solutions. Fabrica Athens is a living cell that is constantly changing shape depending on the season, situations and people with the energies they carry per season.

Despite the lockdown condition, how can artists and the world be creative?

Creativity is an internal process that often has an external impact. A sculpture, a poem, a song, to how I cook or make my house. Many times when man is pressured by various conditions, his need for expression and creation swells. It may be an inner cry that tries to externalize so as not to explode. So if this is not the time to create, when will be the time?

What are you doing at the moment?

The actions we prepare are varied and we hope to be able to carry them out. Initially, the second phase of the Sabarbar action continues, which we implement together with the team No Play – Urban Project and other independent partners. A free songwriting seminar will be held at this stage. At the same time, we continue with Stathis Grapsas the online meetings – lessons in penitentiary establishments. That we have the opportunity to maintain this relationship with the prisoners, we believe is important for both sides.
It is important to keep the thread, because imagine that at the moment penitentiaries are not allowed to visit. So, continuing the courses creates a bridge of communication with the society.

The courses hosted by the roof of our Organization, Fabrica Artspace, continue online. Contemporary acrobatic dance, power stretching, shendao qigong, movement medicine and pilates – as the closed team of the “Research Theater” workshop of Fabrica Athens continues.

The Theater of Research continues to explore theater-pedagogical ways that respond to current reality and events. In addition, the documentary created on the way of work that followed the “Research Theater” in the previous quarantine is completed. The documentary was created by Adriana Maltezeanou as part of her internship at our artistic organization. Also, through the practices of the Theater of Research, the performer and trainer of the organization, Giovanna Michaliadi Sarti, continues the research for the creation of the play – study “Xanthi”, which we hope will be presented when conditions allow. We are also working on an educational show with soap bubbles (Bubble Performance), where in addition to the documentary there will be a place that will take us on a journey into the scientific phenomenon of the soap bubble.

Would you like to tell us how the idea for the “SabarBar” action came about?

Sabar is a type of cactus, while in Arabic it is associated with the concept of patience. We wanted to express ourselves together and create something that is connected to the public space of the neighborhood of Exarcheia, but that lasts over time. Thus, SabarBar was born in March 2020, when within the framework of the Co-Athens / Curing the Limbo program of the Municipality of Athens, 20 Athenian groups from various fields met with the refugee participants of the program, with the aim of trying an original idea in practice. The locals of the city are active in the field of culture, but also in other practices, to actively cooperate with our newly arrived roommates, jointly proposing ideas that can make our city better. We for SabarBar work closely with the UrbanDig Project.

What is the response of the people so far?

Despite the difficult times we are going through due to the quarantine, more than 40 people showed interest in the Online Oral History Seminar we held. The purpose of this series of workshops was to get acquainted with the methodology of oral history: the collection and processing of oral testimonies. The seminar included four 1½ hour online meetings and at least one live or online interview that each participant would take.

It was held under the guidance of Tasoula Vervenioti -historic with great experience in oral history- while, as a process, it was coordinated by George Sachini. The participants showed great motivation and the oral story material collected as deliverable was extremely interesting. According to Tassoula, she did not lag behind in any of the corresponding “live” Oral History seminars.

What other projects are you preparing?

We are in the phase where the narratives of the inhabitants of Exarcheia will be turned into songs. Experienced lyricists and composers will be inspired by the material of Oral History that has been gathered by the participants of the workshops with Tasoula Vervenioti and will write lyrics and music, slowly building the “music map” of the city. The songs will be uploaded on the open platform troubadours.gr, an application created by the UrbanDig Project with the Alternative Tours of Athens, while they will be the trigger for a musical-theatrical event that will be presented in the streets of Exarcheia, when conditions allow. The project is part of the co-Athens implemented by the European pilot program of the Municipality of Athens Curing the Limbo. The program is co-financed by the NSRF under the UIA program.

What is your wish for the period we are going through?

Good start to the new season to come. Let us all manage to be reborn from our ashes, to shake off our shoulders coats that do not belong to us and to move on to a new page, which we will fill with beautiful colors this time.

Many thanks to theatermag. You can find the interview with photos here.

Ten Worlds in the Passage of a Ephemeral Breath

Ten Worlds in the Passage of a Ephemeral Breath

“The theater is not here to monologue, but to communicate, animate and unite.”

Nowadays, through the art of theater,  wanted the disease of our state to be revealed. A system whose operation is not much different from any other mechanical system, and which, from the smallest gears to the engine of its engine, limps. It only takes a part of the system, a small part of it (but a large one does the same), that it has not been properly maintained, that its quality or performance has not been ascertained, in order to deregulate its proper operation.

If we assume that each part that makes up the system is our function in it, that is, the way in which each of us acts, acts and offers to the system and consequently the way in which it communicates, cooperates and interfaces with the rest parts of the system, then in my case and Fabrica Athens, this way is art and specifically theater.

Theater

One of the functions of the theater, the one that moved me to get to know it, is communication. Throughout the theatrical process (from the rehearsal, to the exhibition – presentation, but also the discussions – actions that it can trigger) a creative dialogue unfolds (verbal and non-verbal) that develops in a fertile ground of respect. At least that is the case with our team and its collaborations. This process has an astonishing extroversion, which springs from and is based on a diametrically opposed, profound introversion.

Along the way I also realized that the theater is moving. It can be the reason for a change in a unit, in a whole, in a series of events, while these in turn can also contribute to the change of the theater. In this way one can say that theater can be in cases of prevention, ephemeral medicine or even treatment.

Now

In the place and time in which we live, and as part of the state system mentioned above, it is crucial for everyone to offer and resist whatever means they have and express it. With this thought, the action “Ten Worlds in the Passage of a Ephemeral Breath” beyond a musical course, as it seems at first sight, is both a social act and a statement. That the theater does not wait for the stages and opportunities in culture to reopen. Theater is a living organism and seizes the opportunities of life now as part of life itself. The theater is not here to monologue, but to communicate, animate and unite.

The inspiration for the action was the collection of handmade masks “Couples in the Ten Worlds” by my mother, Sylvana Sarti. The Ten Worlds referring to Nietzschean Buddhism (the World of Hell, Hunger, Beastliness, Anger, Calmness, Euphoria, Learning, Understanding or Partial Enlightenment, Bodhisattva and Enlightenment), the ten ways which we understand and respond to phenomena, or in fact in reality, contain each other and coexist in every moment of life; even in this “dark” period we are going through. It is up to us to direct our energy and what our intention is to enlighten these worlds.

Movement Medicine

Meditation • Dance and Physical Expression

The online sessions of Movement Medicine Greece started spontaneously due to the special circumstances of last spring. It soon turned out that the online experience was extremely beneficial for many people, with different levels of experience and a connection to movement and meditation. And so they continued from the beginning of this season, before the news came to us about the new restrictions, bringing together people from many different parts of Greece and Europe. The goal is to keep moving together, with what we have right now and what is coming, and to do the best we can to stay active, creative and in touch!

What Movement Medicine is; Movement Medicine is a physical practice of motor meditation / awareness through movement that combines the pleasure of our dance with the focus of mindfulness – in motion! Together, it brings the wisdom of shamanic understanding of our precious relationship with nature and the world around us. It invites us to breathe, to return to our body, to listen to it and to let it “translate” our experience into movement.

SaBarBar project in the context of co-Athens

The multiactive Art group Fabrica Athens collaborates with the group No Play / UrbanDig Project and presents sabarBar.

The sabarBar project is a platform for open participation in a co-creation process, triggered by true stories, testimonies and narrations of residents of Exarcheia. These stories will be turned into lyrics, songs, chants and a theatrical polyphonic event.

Starting point is a “datsun” with a body or otherwise an “art and meeting place on wheels”. Every now and then it will park in Exarchia and will create an occasion for us to meet, to exchange ideas and reflections. At the same time, he will collect stories, inform and invite everyone to take part in the next actions.

This collaboration has its roots in last March. As part of the Co-Athens / Curing the Limbo program of the Municipality of Athens, 20 Athenian groups met with the refugee participants of the program, with the aim of testing an original idea in practice. The locals of the city and active in the field of culture and other practices, to actively cooperate with our newly arrived roommates, jointly proposing ideas that can make our city better.

Two months of systematic digital meetings gave rise to the idea of Sabar Bar. Sabar Bar meaning “cactus” and “patience” in Arabic. The concept of Sabar Bar inspired us to create something that will last in time. Songs taken from the most beautiful and powerful stories that the area and its people have to tell.

SaBarBar is a call to an unmediated experience of sharing and open discussion in public. An attempt to learn from each other through the way everyone perceives reality in the neighborhood. With the aim of finally bringing the ‘other realities’ into a dialectical relationship with each other, highlighting practices of co-creation, synergy and active participation in the commons.

The actions of saBarBar are addressed to everyone! They include extroversion activities in the neighborhood, oral history workshops, song and theater creation, (open) rehearsals and a theatrical polyphonic event.

SaBarBar was co-created by Momina Algaga, Vasia Balkanioti, Yaman United, Fani Katecho, Anna Magoulioti, Katerina Protonotariou, George Sachini, Mohammad Tayeb. It is a collaboration of not playing / UrbanDig Project with Fabrica Athens.

Look for it and… join the ride !! To turn the road together into an open workshop of expression and co-creation.

Theatrical Connections

1st Seminar Theatrical Connections – Methoni, Messinia
The Multi-active Art Group Fabrica Athens crossed the cosmopolitan borders of Athens and for the first year transferred its educational activity to the diverse countryside of Greece.

Our team held the 1st seminar “Theatrical Connections” in the coastal Methoni of Messinia in August 2020, while at the same time organized a summer Cultural Week with activities and events for all ages.

The main goal of the theatrical seminar was the exchange and the creation of connections between the participants and the organizers of the seminar with the provincial city that hosted the action and its inhabitants. This was achieved through the implementation of free actions and events for the public of Methoni, which had as a point of reference the people of the theatrical seminar.

The seminar was attended by 11 participants – artists from Athens and London, while the organizing – educational mission of Fabrica Athens consisted of 5 people. The participants of the workshop enjoyed moments of artistic research, creation and recreation 24/7, since the experience of the seminar in nature, included:

  • Accommodation at Camping Methoni (10 steps, literally, from the sandy beach).
  • Visits to monuments of historical importance (Kapodistrian Mutual School of Methoni, Methoni Castle) and places of natural beauty (walk in the city).
  • Participation as artists – animators in recreational events for the residents and vacationers of the area.

In addition, it should be noted that all this would have been impossible without the invaluable support of the local community. Despite the difficulties and the peculiarity of the times, the people of Methoni enthusiastically supported and participated in all the activities of the Cultural Summer that we designed for them.

More specifically, the local and tourist public of the Messinian city, within 10 days attended the following open – free actions:

  1.  Daily Yoga on the beach of Camping Methoni
  2.  1 Circus Lab and Skills Laboratory, Circus Lab
  3.  2 Soap Bubble Shows, Mr and Mrs Bubble – The Show
  4.  2 Performances with Fires, Fire Show
  5.  1 Musical performance – live entitled “A guitar two voices”
  6.  1 Performance Circus with 13 artists, Circus Variete
  7.  1 Site Specific Performance Walking entitled “Connections”. This play was created during the 10 days of the seminar “Theatrical Connections”. The performance was directed by the place itself, as participants and trainers were inspired by the unique elements that govern it for its creation (history, mythology, geography, geology, tradition, people, experiences, etc.).

It is equally important to note the local sponsors who supported the “Theatrical Links”:

  • Camping Methoni
  • ILIODYSI HOUSES
  • Modon Restaurant
  • Kitchen “Katsarola”
  • The Tavern “O Alector”
  • Surrealism Café – Bar
  • Street Art Café
  • Greophone Creperie

While at the same time we would like to thank them warmly for their selfless offer:

who contributed significantly to the whole process, with the guided tours and the concession of the Cultural Center of Methoni.

A piece of history

The relationship of the theatrical organization of Fabrica Athens with the city of Methoni was built gradually. After 4 years of summer tours in Methoni and the Costa Navarino Resort, our team managed to turn a dream into a piece of history.

To bring theater – art close to nature (since the former feeds on the latter and only close to it finds strong roots), but also to bring culture outside the major urban centers, to more remote areas, such as Methoni.

This for a self-managed group like ours is a big first step to continue to organize and carry out cultural activities, such as the “Theatrical Connections”. As Fabrica Athens’s research scope extends to the use of theater and other performing arts as a social and anthropological tool, the team aims to invest in:

  1. Actions addressed to remote areas of Greece and to an audience with fewer cultural opportunities.
  2. Artistic interventions that create cultural – social – human connections and a channel of communication and
  3. Cultural activities that have a multifaceted impact on the place and its people, with the aim of their positive development.

Modern Acrobatic Dance

During the lessons we will research the kinetic vocabulary of modern dance and we will work on both the physical capabilities (technique, dynamics, flow, balance and acrobatics) as well as the expansion of our dance memory. We will explore the possibilities of sequencing small and larger dance / kinetic combinations, and their functionality in space. We will play with the alternations in the composition of these combinations (sequence, quality and speed).

The aim of the course is to find the mechanics of each movement and its possible alternations, to play the limits of a three-dimensional movement in space and to develop a choreographically complex result that will emerge through simpler kinetic materials.

The course is aimed at people of all levels in contemporary dance.

Suzuki Training Meetings

The purpose of the meetings is to create a common place and time, where performing artists have the opportunity to learn about the Suzuki Method for Actors and to train together, based on its techniques. The need to hold meetings and disseminate the world-renowned Suzuki method arose after the meeting coordinator participated in the Suzuki Training summer program in Japan with Tadashi Suzuki, Kameron H. Steele and Aki Sato-Johnson. By encouraging their students to share the method and continue to train with a group, the meetings are not so much a lesson as a lesson, but a willingness to build a group theatrical practice environment based on the technical / physical code and the values of the method. Hoop Dance – Dance with Hula Hoop

For those who like dance, acrobatics, juggling or all three, Hoop dance is the ideal combination of them in one lesson! Widespread mainly in the USA, but also in some parts of Europe, Hoopdance (the dance with a wreath – hula hoop), is a special way of expression, exercise and fun.

The Hoop dance course is aimed at those who are bored of dancing on their own, those who like dancing and acrobatic elements in it and those who like to learn themselves by connecting with something outside of themselves, the experimentation and the acquisition of new skills.

This course is open to all levels. The courses are private or in small groups and personal work is done with each participant separately. Within an hour and a half, hoopdancers practice the basic principles of hoop dance, learn trick with the wreath (depending on the level of each), which in the end we include in a choreography (hoopography).

Suzuki Training for Actors – Fabrica Lab 2020

Suzuki Training Meetings for Actors

Suzuki.

A few words about the Suzuki method:

An MRI reveals to the patient where they are located and what are the deep problems of his body. The theatrical method of Tadashi Suzuki for the actor-performer works in the same way.

The Suzuki practitioner has the opportunity to find out where he is sick, just like the MRI scanner does. The only difference between the theatrical method Suzuki and the tomograph is the following: the first, in addition to showing you where the disease is, gives the actor-performer the opportunity to be healed.

So, the Suzuki Method is a world-renowned theatrical workout that:

Highlights in the actor – performer unresolved knots and obstacles.

-Through practice he solves and overcomes the obstacles that appear.

-Gives the actor-performer the ability to manage his energy level and makes him ready.

Encourages practitioners to live in the “question” instead of the “answer” and to constantly strive for their improvement.

Those interested in participating in the meetings are kindly requested to wear comfortable, black sportswear with a fitted line and to have white, sports socks with them.
