[Open Call Summer 2026]: Theatre Immersion in Greece

Summer Theatre Immersion in Greece 2026
Theatre Connections VII: Fabrica Athens’ summer theatre immersion returns to Methoni, Messinia and invites participants from all over the world.

The Multi-active Group of Art Fabrica Athens is announcing an international open call to artists and theatre lovers to in a 12-day theatre immersion, August 1-12, 2026, under the guidance of its members, Fanis Katechos and Giovanna Michaliadi Sarti.

A group of international participants will come together and embark on a shared journey of interaction with the place and its people through the theatrical process. Participants will be inspired by the place and their common experience and will create from scratch a performance to share with the locals and visitors of Methoni.

The 12-day theater experience includes:

Theatre Seminar

The theater seminar “Theatre Connections” is conducted by the trainers of Fabrica Athens and its collaborators. It is based on the technique and philosophy of the theater system “Theatre of Research” that Fabrica Athens has been developing since 2012, inspired by Fanis Katechos.

More specifically, “Theatre of Research” has been in development since 2012 and uses original techniques and techniques based on the methods of Jerzy Grotowski, Konstantin Stanislavski, Eugenio Barba, Giles Foreman, Suzan Batson, Augusto Boal, Kitt Johnson and Tadashi Suzuki. The practice is used for the training of actors and performers, but also as a tool of Applied Theatre in correctional institutions, youth exchange programs, migrant camps and more.

During the 12 days, the participants of the theatre seminar will be directed by Fabrica Athens in order to create an ensemble performance inspired by the place. Furthermore, they will take part as artists, animators or audience in various activities of a cultural week which is organized by Fabrica Athens in Methoni.

This year for the first time, the participants are invited to share with the seminar team or in the context of the cultural week a work-in-progress or completed project of their own. In this way, Fabrica Athens wants to encourage new creators or creators with new projects to take their first steps towards the public, to receive feedback from experienced artists and the public on their work and to strengthen their CV.

More specifically, the aim of the seminar and the cultural activities is the personal, social and professional development and empowerment of the participants through the playful and liberating experience of theater. Additionally, “Theatre Connections” aim to encourage exchange and dissemination of cultural elements between participants and the local community through the various forms of theater (applied theater, street theater, performance) and participatory culture.

Cultural Week

During the 12 days, Fabrica Athens curates a ten-day cultural event with free events for the audience, in which participants are welcome not only to attend, but also to actively contribute to it.

The events of the ten-day cultural event are of varied interest and the program is renewed every year. Just some of the activities that have been held in the past are: yoga on the coast of Methoni, walk-about events (stilts, bubble shows, parades, etc.), circus variety shows and street theater performances, theatrical and site-specific performances in the Castle Moat, flash mobs, workshops, cultural and environmental routes, lectures, etc.

The events of the ten-day cultural event are aimed at children, adolescents, adults and especially families. Furthermore, they are designed so that people of different cultural backgrounds can attend, regardless of language, and the majority of them are accessible to people with mobility difficulties. Particularly important is the fact that all activities are free of charge.

The participants of the theater workshop join the events developed by Fabrica Athens as audience, artists or animators, while this year they have the opportunity to express interest in presenting their own activity or project (work-in-progress or completed).

Guided Tours, Excursions & Special Moments

In addition to the theatrical seminar and cultural events, participants can enjoy morning (or evening) swimming on the shore, have the opportunity to travel to beautiful islands of the coast of Methoni, visit its medieval castle (which is surrounded on three sides by water) and one of the first mutual teaching schools in Greece. They will hear from local teachers and communities about the history of Methoni, enjoy delicious Greek summer meals together, and there will not miss coffee and exchange of stories with a neighbour.

Accommodation

Participants have the option of staying together at the organized Camping Methoni. The campsite is equipped with toilets, showers, washing machines, kitchens, mini markets and a restaurant. Participants are welcome to bring their own tent or the organization can provide it upon request.

[Social Activities] Meeting Point – Creative Europe 2025

The international program “MEETING POINT” 2025 begins with an artists’ residency and continues with a tour of 11 performances in Denmark, Poland, and Greece.

The second edition of the international artists’ residency program MEETING POINT will begin on October 11, 2025. It will be an intensive three-week program bringing together a diverse group of Ukrainian artists for creation and performances across Europe. The program, which highlights the power of cultural collaboration in times of crisis, includes a two-week residency at Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium–Odin Teatret in Holstebro, Denmark, followed by an 11-performance tour in Poland and Greece.

From October 11 to 22, 2025, eight emerging Ukrainian artists will collaborate with European directors and facilitators in Holstebro to create an original, interdisciplinary performance. The work will explore themes such as displacement, identity, and resilience, blending theatre, dance, music, and visual arts. This collaborative piece will then embark on a tour, engaging audiences in seven cities:

• In Denmark: 5 performances in Holstebro, Silkeborg, and Herning (October 23–25).
• In Poland: 3 performances in Warsaw and Siedlce (October 27–28).
• In Greece: 3 performances in Athens (October 30–31).

“MEETING POINT creates a vital space for artistic encounters and dialogue,” said Jenny Crissey, project coordinator at Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium. “We look forward to seeing this group of Ukrainian artists build a strong, shared artistic language during their residency and then share it with diverse European audiences. We expect it to serve as a profound testament to the role of culture in fostering understanding and solidarity.”

“Participating in MEETING POINT is more than an artistic process,” said Denys Fedorenko, a Ukrainian artist who also took part in the project’s artistic residencies in 2024. “It provides a platform for our voices and shows that our stories can deeply move international audiences.”

MEETING POINT is co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe program and is a collaboration between DSI Swinging Europe (DK, coordinator), Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium–Odin Teatret (DK), b’cause Dance Company (PL), and Fabrica Athens (GR).

Going deep into basic CI-principles we will examine acrobatic partnering elements. First working within our own movement research we will expand the exploration to interact with other bodies. The investigation work between acrobatics, CI-principles and contemporary phrasing is preparing us to react fast and creative to new and challenging situations and provide lightness in a dance with shared weight.

Günter is working with an organic approach from the “inside out”. Central elements are the use of the breath and a constant sharpening of our awareness. An ongoing question in his practice is how we can dance with maximum presence and individuality and respect and challenge the boundaries of our own body at the same time.

Workshop Discription:

In the annual course “Theatre of Research” with lecturer Fanis Katechos (Fabrica Athens), participants will be trained as “Dimensional Performers”, i.e. performers, who:

  • Self-manage their art

They learn how to research, to be independent creators and trainers of performing arts, but also how to be efficient with their presence within a group and in the hands of another creator

  • They have a multidimensional perspective of the performing arts and are equipped with the appropriate tools to maneuver in various interpretive ways

They receive a comprehensive theatrical education and multiple stimuli in order to choose their own specialization in the performing arts. They gain practical and theoretical knowledge of physical theater, devised theater, street theater, site specific performance, and theater as a social and anthropological tool.

During the 3 trimesters of the annual theater workshop, trainees will be trained in world-renowned physical theater methods and techniques, as well as techniques that have been developed through the Research Theater path itself.

More specifically, participants will learn about physical theater techniques of Jerzy Grotowski and Odin Teatret, ground acrobatics, the practice of yoga and qigong, mime and theatrical clown techniques, as well as Susan Batson’s acting techniques.

More specifically by teaching quarter:

October ǀ November ǀ December

“Diving”

In the 1st quarter, participants:

  • Redefine their presence in the here and now.
  • Discover the tools they have as performers (body, mind and emotion).
  • Expand the limits of their physical and mental endurance and learn to manage energy in various physical acts.
  • Identify their visible and invisible masks and work on bringing themselves to “point zero” or “white cloth”, where everything is recorded from the beginning.
  • Work intensively with the center of the body to expand consciousness in movement and release breathing.

January ǀ February

“Alalagmos”

During the 2nd quarter,

  • Participants are introduced to the relationship between the body and the sound it produces (embodied sound).
  • The trainees discover their natural – primitive sound and work on strengthening the respiratory system and their physical speakers.
  • Inseparable bonds are created between the individual and the whole and they re-create relationships with the surrounding space and the objects/bodies it includes.

March ǀ April ǀ May

“Production”

In the last quarter of the workshop, the trainees:

  • Organize the practical and theoretical material they have collected and produced by themselves.
  • Create their personal training, which they are invited to share with the group.
  • Present the performance material they have created within a staged composition.

In addition, program participants will have the opportunity to attend with priority a series of seminars, programs and training that the Fabrica Athens team will hold in the period 2025-2026. Attending these will have a positive effect on the more direct and comprehensive training of the participants. In more detail, during the year the following will be implemented:

  • Annual Research Theater Workshop
  • Training in Stilts, Acrobatics (ground and aerial), Object Manipulation
  • Youth Theater Education Programs
  • Visit to theater education programs in correctional institutions
  • Workshops and performances of various subjects

Who is it addressed to:

The training is aimed at professional artists (performers, actors, dancers, etc.), students of performing and other arts, but also at people with less experience in (performing) arts, who have the willingness and availability to work in a dynamic group centered on theater.

Certificate of Attendance:

At the end of the workshop cycle, participants receive an official Certificate of Attendance from the Fabrica Athens Theater Organization.

Finally, although the annual “Theatre of Research” workshop is self-contained, interested parties are encouraged to continue their studies in the “Theatre Research and Education Program” of Fabrica Athens, which lasts one or two additional years. In this, the trainees continue the 2nd year by delving deeper into “Alalagmos – Part B”. At the same time, they create an ensemble performance and, relying on the peer teaching method, are trained to teach younger trainees. In the 3rd year, separate work is carried out with each trainee to create a solo performance.

Body, conflict, truth: the stage as a political and poetic act – Teatro Nucleo (13th HRTFest)

The seminar Body, conflict, truth: the stage as a political and poetic act with Teatro Nucleo, is part of the International Research Theater Laboratory – OSMOSIS, which will be held as part of the 13th HRTFest.

It is a ten-day, international laboratory with trainers of theater and performing arts from all over the world (Greece, Italy, Germany, Poland, Denmark, USA), which will end in the creation of the show Osmosis – The Performance: an open artistic jam with the directon of Fabrica Athens, which will seal the closing ceremony of the Festival.

Workshop Description:

In this intensive workshop, Horacio Czertok, founder of Teatro Nucleo, assisted by actress and director Natasha Czertok and a historic voice of engagement and research theater, invites participants to explore the stage body as a field of tension between conflict and truth, between political urgency and poetic expression.

Through a practice grounded in physical action, radical listening and relationship, the workshop proposes a living exploration of what it means to inhabit the stage as a space of truth: a place where the body does not act, but exposes itself, takes the risk of presence, becomes the bearer of questions, memory, disobedience.

Conflict – inner, social, symbolic – is the starting point. Not as an obstacle, but as a creative engine, as matter to be traversed in order to transform the gesture into a poetic and political act. A collective, yet deeply individual practice, aimed at actors, performers, gesture researchers, and anyone who wants to investigate the transformative power of the body on stage and in society.

“We do not seek the perfect form, but the necessary act. We do not seek to represent the world, but to transform it.” (Horacio Czertok)

Bio:

Teatro Nucleo is a theater cooperative founded in 1974 in Buenos Aires by Cora Herrendorf and Horacio Czertok. In Ferrara since ’78 it has run the Teatro Julio Cortazar. An independent theater, a permanent laboratory, which for 50 years has been involved in research on the art of the actor, training of actors and directors, community theater, promotion of street theater as an autonomous art, theater projects in the social, theater in prison, professional training for social and health workers, theater pedagogy, conferences, internships, workshops. The company boasts participation in more than 150 festivals on 4 continents, with a predilection for theater in open spaces, re-inhabiting streets, squares, hamlets and bringing inhabitants, audiences and even passers-by back into the spaces of sociality. In 2024 on the occasion of its 50th birthday, Teatro Nucleo brought theater, circus and dance to the squares of Ferrara, organizing the Rabicano International Theater Festival for Open Spaces. Teatro Nucleo sees theater as an instrument of evolution for both spectator and actor, focusing its attention on the relationship created between them. It does not have a preferred audience; it identifies the human being as a possible interlocutor. From an imperative of elementary justice and the idea that it is in these very people that new life and new meaning can be found in art, Teatro Nucleo is driven to pay great attention to all those excluded from artistic enjoyment and production. Teatro Nucleo is a theater production, training, and research organization, recognized by the MiC’s National Fund for Live Performing Arts, the Emilia Romagna Region, and the City of Ferrara

The seminar Sculpting Presence: A Psychophysical Approach for Actors with Katerina Drakopoulou, is part of the International Research Theater Laboratory – OSMOSIS, which will be held as part of the 13th HRTFest.

This workshop invites participants to cultivate their stage presence through psychosomatic processes, drawing inspiration from Butoh. The training is organized around three axes:

concentration through stillness, slowness, isolation and sculptural form,

receptivity and response through the exploration of the experience of “something moves you” and

transformation through the somatization of poetic images.

Through these practices, participants are invited to develop the body, mind, sensation and imagination as a single, living organism of expression. By deepening awareness, cultivating sensitivity and expanding their expressive spectrum, participants open space for new creative possibilities and strengthen their stage presence. The workshop offers a field of experimentation, where familiar patterns of movement and perception are softened and the authentic expressive dynamics of the performer emerge.

Workshop Description:

The work will focus on several aspects:

the performers physical training

the development of actions inspired by the use of an object

vocal exploration: the discovery of an individual rhythm, spacial awareness and dynamism

The performer’s work evolves from the creation of personal material with an object as a partner and culminates with a montage.

Throughout the development of this material the performer will weave it with texts, songs and the use of space.

The workshop aims at encouraging a personal process opening up hidden meanings.

Bio: Donald Kitt was born in Canada in 1964, just a few days after Odin Teatret was born. After studying at the University of Winnipeg, he acted in many performances until 1989, when he co-created Primus Theatre in Canada, a company dedicated to original, multi-disciplinary performances which toured throughout Canada, USA and Europe. After the group ceased its activities in 1998, Donald Kitt moved to Italy where he worked as a performer, teacher and stilt instructor. Donald studied and performed Topeng dance in Bali (1996) under the guidance of the Balinese Master I Made Djimat. In 2006 Donald joined Odin Teatret and now, as well as acting, he directs, performs on stilts, teaches workshops and instructs young stilters and performers involved in barters and transformances.
