The zoo story : 13/02 until 27/03/2022

The zoo story
The performance The zoo story by Edward Albee, directed by Petros Michalas, starts at the Fabrica Art space from February 13, 2022.

A few words about the project.

A chance meeting of two people on a bench in Central Park will be the occasion for two different worlds to emerge. Peter, the compromised family man, and Jerry, the restless man who fails to adapt to social conventions, will become adversaries in a tough life game in which we can hardly distinguish between the perpetrator and the victim.

Albi with his ironic humor will point out to us the harsh truths we often cover in order to continue living our own false dream. A false dream that hides loneliness and lack of communication. Because as Albi says: “… Man must have a way of communicating with SOMETHING… If we could misunderstand things so easily, then why did we invent the word love?”

Theater & Folk Song

Workshop Description

For over 25 years, Teatr Brama has developed its own workshop method by creating an ideal space for creativity, education and self-improvement. In his activities he aims at the honest relationship with the participants by building it with devotion to their needs and interests.

This particular Teatr Brama workshop with Daniel Jacewicz provides the opportunity to develop creativity, discovering the physical abilities of the participants in an atmosphere of enjoyment, fun, humor and understanding, aiming at the freedom of expression of thoughts and feelings.

The techniques of the workshop are based on many years of experience and work with actors. The workshop encourages participants to honestly seek their authentic expression in art, through movements, acrobatics, storytelling, acting, rhythm and song. They will be taught what is considered most interesting to see on stage, hatching the theatrical consciousness and the relationship between fellow actors. Due to the intense techniques used, the advantage of the workshop is that participants engage in a process of development, the purpose of which is confidence, emotional deposition and body expression through movement.

The workshop includes: Basic theatrical methods, theatrical training, vocal exercises, use of the body as a musical instrument, use of traditional songs, orthophony, exercises that make the participants realize their body on stage.

More specifically, they will have the opportunity to learn about theatrical techniques that help them practice their voice freely and in a controlled manner. They will focus on the connection of body, voice and emotions, which in the view of Teatr Brama, is the key to discovering and empowering the artistic potential of the participants. Finally, we will explore through songs the true meaning of theatrical dialogue. The song can be a therapeutic experience for the group, thus strengthening and developing the relationship between its members.

Daniel Jacewicz
Theater director, actor, cultural animator, theater instructor

In 1996, in Goleniow (PL) he founded Teatr Brama, an independent theatre and association (NGO) combining artistic, educational and cultural activities. He is the originator and producer of the BRAMAT Theater Festival and the Laknienia Festival of Youth Theater. He is a longtime animator for local, national and international theater activities and projects and winner of most major off theater awards. He is the initiator of multidirectional cooperation networks between local and national artists and centers (including the Polish Theater Offensive, West Pomeranian Theater Offensive) and initiator of many international projects. He is the leader of a theater center, founded in 2012 and headquartered in Goleniów, where cyclical program activities directed primarily to the local community (children, youth, adults and seniors) are carried out while promoting multiculturalism. Every year Teatr Brama hosts EVS/ESC volunteers, thanks to which Goleniów has become one of the important centers of European volunteering.

Methods/Workshops

For over 25 years, Teatr Brama has developed its own method of creating an ideal space for creativity, education, engagement and self-development. In our educational activities we focus on partnerships with participants, honesty and attentiveness to the needs and interests of the participants. Teatr Brama’s workshops always have a flexible formula that can be modified to each meeting.

Teatr Brama has developed its own method of work, which consists in developing potential and creativity, discovering the participants’ natural abilities, creating a fun atmosphere that allows for open, free exploration. Participants at the workshop learn to share responsibility, to create space and community.

Methods of work are based on several years of experience of working with actors. Our work encourages individuals to search for sincere and authentic expression in art, utilizing physical movement, acrobatics, storytelling, dramatic acting, rhythm, music and singing. We teach what we feel is most interesting to see on stage – encouraging theatrical spirit, consciousness and developing relationship to fellow actors. Due to our intensive methods, the advantage of our workshops is that our participants become highly involved in a transformative process. Workshops activate and open the group because integration is essential. The purpose is building trust, emotional statements and body expression through movement, voice and improvisation exercises. Our workshops nurture a creative working environment for young artists.

Workshops include: theatrical training, vocal work, use of the body as an instrument, utilizing archaic folk songs, work with language, diction and enunciation, exercises to make participants conscious of their body on stage, stage work, elementary theatrical tasks, stage and set construction, impulse exercises and reactions to the acting process and performance preparation including all participants of the workshop.

The exhibition consists of photographs of the employees of an old Machine Shop and Foundry in the city of Kucove, Albania, as well as of the factory itself. The machine shop and the foundry belong to the Petroleum Engineering Center where it was created in 1956 and even now maintains about 203 families. The purpose of the essay is to capture the atmosphere that existed reminiscent of another decade. Because, although everything is quite old and the factory looks abandoned, in reality everything is working properly as in the new factories.

Movement Medicine Greece – Somatic Expression with María Varelá – Workshops 2020

Movement Medicine • Awakening the Body – Dance Meditation • Somatic Expression at Fabrica Artspace with María Varelá
What is it?
Movement Medicine is a fascinating dance meditation/mindful movement practice that combines the exhilaration of free movement with mindfulness as well as the wisdom of shamanic understanding of nature and the world around us. The practice invites us to breathe, follow our bodies and let them “translate” our experience in movement and original expression.
What do we do?
We dance – no shoes and no steps to follow! With the help of carefully selected music from many parts of the planet, and clear guidance from the facilitator, we will give our attention to our breath, sensations and whatever is alive in the moment. Through our own free dance and simple experiential exercises, we will encourage the body to awaken, the heart to shape us, the mind to focus, transforming our experience in the present into our very own “choreography” and authentic personal expression.
In this way, we can release accumulated physical, mental and emotional tensions, while allowing, creative expression of different parts of ourselves – through setting our movement free, letting it set us free in return.
Who is it for?
Adults that are interested in discovering new ways of mindful, yet energetic, release and replenishment – along with deep curiosity and urge to re-acquaint themselves with the intelligence, expressiveness, and sheer delight of their own moving body.
No previous experience with dance/meditation is needed, only keeping in mind to respect your own body and physical condition.
Movement is Medicine whether you have been moving your whole life or you are a complete beginner and might feel like you have two left feet (or hands!). You will only need clothes you can move comfortably in, your own bottle of water – and, most importantly, yourself, just as you are.

Facilitator • María Varelá
María Varelá has been following the Movement Medicine dancing path since 2014. She has completed the Movement Medicine Professional Training with founders Susannah & Ya’Acov Darling Khan in Devon, England. She has been a School of Movement Medicine Local Organiser for Greece since July 2017; she designs and teaches Movement Medicine classes/introductory workshops, online and in-person, in and around Athens.
Her first point of contact with meditation and movement were Osho active meditations and meditative therapies (2006) by which she was inspired to delve into the Twice Born – Primal Training (2007-2009) in Greece and Italy. Having already felt the connection, through this field, to the liberating power of dance in experiential approaches to healing, she found herself intensively participating in Cathy Ryan’s embodied movement workshops in Athens and Thessaloniki (2011-2014). Movement and dance showed her, again, the point where all the pieces of research and personal quest are connected and come alive: within the moving body. And this is where she keeps coming back to search, and find, the richness of her experience as a human being in skin, muscles and bones.
Her academic background is in Translation Studies (BA), European Studies (MA) and Political Discourse Analysis (PhD). She has lived in England, Italy and Spain, where she spent time working as a researcher at Deusto University in Bilbao. She has travelled to many European countries, and Mexico, presenting papers in international conferences focused on discourse analysis and related fields. She has also worked as an editor, technical writer and writing consultant for non-native English speakers in academia internationally for more than a decade.
