Research Theater – Fanis Katechos / Weekly Courses

Fabrica Athens Theater Group and Fabrica Artspace invite you to the 6th consecutive year of the weekly courses “Theater of Research”.

Fanis Katechos, founding member of the theatrical group, inspirer and main presenter of the modern theatrical method “Theater of Research”, intensively shares for another year the findings of his personal theatrical research, through techniques he has developed and methods he follows such as Grotowski, Eugenio Barba, Peter Brook, Suzuki and Suzan Batson.

The “Theater of Research” is an idea based on practice, which takes place in the here and now. Activating the body, exploring and expanding its boundaries, relaxing the mind, but also exploring the authentic sound landscapes it produces. The goal is the recognition and release of the visible and invisible masks of the human – actor, the extraction of the diamonds that are hidden in each one and the creation of personal (physical – spiritual) and group unity.

Also important is the implantation of the seed of the actor’s autonomy, through the effort to create his personal method, while the overall training through the courses – meetings aims to shape people – artists “plasticine” who are “multi-tools” , “Transparent” who will let others see through them the hidden truth and “anxious” who will manage their roles as tightrope walkers.

The workshops for the artistic period 2018 – 2019 will take place on the following days and hours each week:

– Wednesday, 12:00 – 14:00

– Friday, 17:00 – 19:00

The sections are formed at the beginning of the artistic period. However, for those who are interested in participating in the courses and wish to know the method, they can contact the instructors of Fabrica Athens in the following email for more information and further consultation for their inclusion in the departments: researchtheater@gmail.com (Subject: Weekly Courses )

Completion of the Theatrical Youth Exchange “Roots and Wings”

The multiactive Art Group Fabrica Athens and the German Non-Profit Organization Mostar Friedensprojekt collaborated for the 3rd consecutive year and carried out the 4th in a row Youth Exchange Program between Greece and Germany, with the theme “Roots and Wings”, supported by Hellenic-German Youth Foundation.

The theater and more specifically the theatrical method used by the instructors of Fabrica Athens “Theater of Research” was a tool to approach the theme of the Youth Exchange. Fanis Katechos, Giovanna Michaliadi Sarti and Pavlos Melikidis were next to the young participants, who for 16 days accompanied and guided a theatrical exploration in Athens and Berlin. The workshops that the young people attended were intensive, daily from 09:00 to 15:00, while in their free time, in addition to the personal and group work – improvisations that they were asked to create, they had the opportunity to get to know the city that hosted, to socialize with its inhabitants and to discover its artistic life and action. It is important to note that the project was free and fully covered financially the participation of young people in theatrical workshops, accommodation, food and transportation costs.

The workshops attended by the 20 young artists took part in the Fabrica Artspace and the Theaterhaus Berlin. The program, after its evaluation, was for them an unprecedented theatrical experience, although all of them had either professional or amateur contact with the theater. This experience included intense physical practice, in order to acquire physical consciousness, group connection and communication, but also unity or otherwise coordination of action / body and idea / mind. The trainers maneuvered between various theatrical methods and not only, but also techniques that they have developed themselves.

Important is the emphasis given by the people of Fabrica Athens to the anthropological part of art, turning art and theater into a tool for life and vice versa, life into a field of inspiration for art. This is a small but crucial detail, as young people participating in exchange programs discover new qualities in life and in the theater, in an artistic journey, which turns into a journey of self-knowledge by being an active member of a group. Therefore, the exchange programs carried out by the Fabrica team are not only a theatrical experience, but a life experience.

The 2 weeks that the 10 Greeks and the 10 Germans spent together, ended in a performance entitled “Roots and Wings”, which was presented at the Schauspielschule Charlottenburg. The performance was a synthesis of the material created by the participants during the program under the direction of Fabrica Athens.

The theatrical organization of Fabrica Athens and Mostar Friedendensproject will conduct in 2019 a variety of new youth exchange programs, as well as European ERASMUS + programs, which will move around the artistic and theatrical axis.

[2018] Xanthi – Theatrical Performance

The Multiactive Art Group Fabrica Athens presents its first theatrical production for 2018 “Xanthi”.

From reality to myth. Where does reality end and where does the Myth begin? Where is the beginning of Fallacy and where is the Truth? Light gives life to the shadow of a hard Dream and its reflection is reflected in a fluid world Am I awake or dreaming? And when I dream how do I know I’m not awake? I do not want to understand, I want to feel. What is the difference between Life, Dream and Myth? Or rather where do they come together?

The play is a modern, theatrical research, based on the life of Xanthi, but also a testimony – a proposal in the “political” theater. Her goal is for the actor’s body and objects to disappear and what will be left is the vibrations.

The workshops that will take part in the Festival are:

Theater of Research – Theater of Research // Fanis Katechos (180 ′)

September 21, 17:00 // September 22, 16:30 // September 23, 14:00

A modern, theatrical method focusing on man and his research nature.

THE IDEA
Research theater is an idea. And what ideas are meant to be is done. It is the truth that we close within ourselves and that we desperately try to find in order to be free. The truth that only through one method can we touch. But through what method will we be able to overcome the obstacles to fly as artists, people and society? Research theater is a way for those looking to get in touch with the art of theater through themselves and the team. It is a continuous exploration of the already existing theatrical methods towards the acquisition of maneuvering and global knowledge and the shaping of the personal, but also group method that will free the human artist from the visible and invisible masks of everyday life. Finding the method that will make him capable to be present in the here and now on stage, but also in life.

THE ACT
This idea was spontaneous. Taking into account the personal need of each individual and the need of each team creates a redemptive cycle of exercises to discover the luggage and tools we have. Exercises that have as a starting point the action, which will bring the result and that free us from the brain function, bringing to the surface forgotten functions that move our limits, while increasing consciousness. Through this wandering we gradually strengthen our body, we watch the memory it has, while walking in its paths we find our true voice, as it comes out as it is through emotional vibrations.
We break down our selfish tendencies and listen to others. We work and act for them. Observing others and rubbing against them is the only way we can exorcise our buried diamonds and serve something higher than ourselves.

THE TARGET
This process aims to give participants the supplies to transform into plasticine people, who will have the ability to adapt to all kinds of conditions. Transformation into multi-tools that have the physical, mental and spiritual power to create an entire universe with whatever weapons, more or less, they have. In addition, the goal is to train actors who will handle their roles as acrobats on a tightrope, depriving themselves of security and without reassurance, but maintaining their personal peace. “Transparent” actors in debt, instead of projecting themselves, show the audience the light.

Interview for Youth Exchange – Race for Tolerance

A Struggle for Tolerance – Tolerace

The Multicultural Art Group Fabrica Athens co-organized with the German Organization “Mostar Friendensproject”, the 7th in a row Youth Exchange Program – Race for Tolerance. The European program took place in Germany, in the city of Bremen from 6 to 15 August 2018, with the support of “Erasmus + Youth in Action”. The countries participating in the program were Greece, Germany, Albania, Armenia, Turkey, Estonia, Ukraine and Great Britain. Greece was represented by the Fabrica Athens Organization, which not only uses the Theater and Theatrical Methods it has developed as an educational – social – humanitarian – research tool, but also trains people in its Theatrical Techniques, training a new generation of trainers. In this program, Fabrica Athens sent its new instructor Babis Loukopoulos, who was responsible for the artistic activities, the theatrical education of the participants, as well as the creation – directing of a theatrical presentation – performance with the theme “Tolerance”.A protest march was staged and staged by the Youth Exchange participants themselves in the center of Bremen, followed by a poetic performance entitled “Tolerace”.

The participants of the Greek delegation were selected by the Higher School of Dramatic Art of the Municipality of Agia Varvara “Iakovos Kampanellis” with which the theatrical organization of Fabrica Athens collaborates. The students of the school and young artists who attended the European project were Giannis Tyrovolas, Nikos Chortarias, Athanasia Papazikou, Dimitra Mazi, Zoe Bithava and Evangelia Christiana. After their experience in the Youth Exchange Program, they gathered at the Fabrica Artspace and shared with the Fabrica Athens Team their experience in the world of Tolerance, Theater and Erasmus+.

The program was for the participants of the Greek mission a special trip to 7 European countries at the same time. Despite the differences, they discovered in common the commonalities with the other cultures, the characteristics that unite them and found ways to communicate and coexist harmoniously in the facilities of the host organization, which hosted them.In addition to the artistic and educational activities they attended, the participants were responsible for the maintenance and cleanliness of the facilities. The occupation with their place of residence captured the acquaintance and the flourishing of a mutual respect between the participants, but also of the space that hosted them. Important for the understanding of the different cultures and social – political – economic structures of the countries, were the free time of the participants, but also the international evenings they organized. At international nights each country was responsible for presenting one of the other participating countries, gathering information from the participants of that country, but also from their personal research.

Asking the Greek participants if the theater functions as a social tool and how, they stated the following: The theater contributed to the greatest extent to the acquaintance, understanding and acceptance among the participants. Knowing others through movement and gesture, a deeper relationship was created. The physical action and friction required by the theatrical process, led to a personal physical, but mainly mental and spiritual opening of each participant. Somatized Theater Techniques created an atmosphere of internal and group concentration and took on the role of catalyst to create an unbroken bond between team members. In addition, the exhibition process enabled the participants to “crumple” into the protected environment of the group, resulting in “softening” like people and opening their minds. They saw people through theatrical activities change the way of thinking, but also the perception of the world. Although the theoretical sessions on Tolerance were important, theater was a practical, fun, meaningful and concise way to feel and experience the meaning of Tolerance and how they can solve it.

Theater: A Tool for Tolerance in the European Erasmus + Programs

Tolerance Over Fear – Refugees You Are Welcome! Erasmus +

Hande Demir and the organization “Limit Gökyüzünde”, organizer of the European program Erasmus + “Tolerance over Fear – Refugees You Are Welcome!” explains the goals of the program to SonDakika.com: “The aim of the project is to understand and reduce Islamophobia in Europe, exploring various aspects of Islam. At the same time, through artistic and other methods, such as theater, role play and yoga, a different view of the refugee issue is cultivated and the participants’ empathy is developed. “

Indeed, the project “Tolerance over Fear – Refugees You Are Welcome!” offered participants from Spain, Sweden, Estonia, Italy, Greece and Turkey a life experience. The young people with their active participation were concerned and brought to the surface new concerns, while their research spirit led them to their in-depth awareness on issues concerning diversity, the group and the individual. The catalyst for the above was the focus of the program’s activities on creative and substantive expression.

Fabrica Athens contributed to the European Erasmus + program by conducting “Research Theater” workshops.

Through the theatrical method developed by Fanis Katechos, which focuses on the human being, and by activating the body in direct action and response, multifaceted goals were achieved: building bonds and relationships between participants, individual expression, expression of ideas and emotions, to the individual and the team, creating a team and team spirit, maintaining the personality within the team, sharing and mixing cultural characteristics, expanding the imagination, creating a group code of communication, overcoming personal obstacles, expanding physical and mental boundaries.

In addition, the Fabrica team held Yoga workshops with Giovanna Michaliadi – Sarti. The practice was used separately and in combination with the theatrical training of the participants and reinforced the purpose of the program.

More specifically: it activated the body and the element of respiration, connected body and mind, brought the person closer to his being, created new balances and relationships between bodies, sharpened the ability to observe without critical mood, while aiming at the recognition of personal thoughts and feelings , in understanding and accepting the present self and the environment, in liberation from thoughts and feelings and in concentration and relaxation in the moment.

This ten-day meeting ended with an interactive performance under the direction of Fabrica Athens. The show was a synthesis of material, ideas and improvisations created by the young people, but also techniques that they practiced with the trainers throughout the project.

This participatory performance was attended by refugees, immigrants, as well as individuals from the Non-Profit Organization ASAM. Participants, organizers and audience, after the show had the opportunity to get to know each other better, but also to enjoy a small circus – spectacle by the Fabrica team.

Tolerance over fear: Refugees you are welcome- Invitation for Participants

Fabrica Athens participates in the European youth exchange program “Tolerance over fear: Refugees you are welcome” which will take place in Ankara, Turkey from April 20 to 30, 2018.

A different theatrical experience aimed at combating Islamophobia, but also a better understanding of different cultures and different thoughts.

Those interested in participating in the program can contact us at researchtheater@gmail.com, sending their CV and a text that will describe the reasons / motives for their participation.

It is important to understand what is happening around us and take action to address situations such as the refugee and immigration crisis. Phenomena due to both wars and natural disasters as well as aversion to the different. Phenomena that take place all over the Earth, affect us all and in all seasons. We hope, therefore, to learn more about our history and the period when we were also active immigrants, to remember our forgotten past, which will be repeated in the future.

6 different countries, 6 different immigration stories (Greece, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Estonia, Turkey)

After 2 youth exchanges focusing on Islamophobia (A call for Tolerance October 2016) and immigration (Express it: EU + Immigration + Refugees March 2017) we expect to understand in depth the refugee and immigration issue through visits to refugee camps in Ankara, to get in touch and talk with historians, but also with real people, families and friends who have experienced immigration.

There is concern that Islamophobia is on the rise, while the immigration and refugee crisis has created phobias against Islamic peoples. This has set in motion a new dialogue in Europe on how best to integrate these people into society, to understand their culture and religion, and to prevent violence and censorship against them. Are European measures responding? Do we respect human rights? How do these measures work in our countries? What is the immigration and refugee policy in our country?

That is why 28 young people will meet in Ankara, Turkey to better understand Islam and the different European cultures, the refugee and immigration movement, to develop tolerance and acceptance of the different for a peaceful coexistence and the fight against fear. between people, religions and cultures.

The approach will be done through artistic methods:

Theater of the oppressed, painting, meditation, dating games, brainstorming, teamwork and discussions.

The following will be investigated:

European plans for the migration crisis.

-Turkey’s agreement with the European Union.

-Visit to an immigration camp in Ankara.

-Historical investigation by LG and Inter.

General Objective: To understand in depth the Islamic and European culture and their differences, the refugee and immigration movement, in order to develop tolerance and acceptance of the different with the aim of a peaceful coexistence and the fight against fear between people, religions and cultures.

All Inclusive- Youth Exnchange Program (Bosnia)

Content and aim Mostar Friedensprojekt implemented together with its partners from Greece, Serbia and Bosnia two youth exchanges under the title “All inclusive – Applying Artistic Theater Methods in Youth Work with Handicapped or Disadvanteged Youth” taking place in Bosnia.

The project intended to deliver a model for future school-focused activities. Participating teamers of the youth exchanges were taught to design own workshops. In subsequent two Youth Exchanges in Bosnia and Herzegovina they learned to implement their knowledge as facilitators under the guidance of trainers from Fabrica Athens Theater Group and their collaborators and put two theater plays on stage with a group of international youth groups that are consisting of impaired and non-impaired youth.

Participating youth learned body oriented and artistic theater methods, while also finding new ways of expressing themselves, becoming more self-confident and comfortable in their bodies. Main objective were for the participating youth to discover a new level of cooperation and mutual understanding of disadvantaged and non-impaired youth and new forms of communication in a joint activity.

The project approached also the inclusion of non-foreign-language speakers. Participating organizations on the other side will plan to promote this model of theater techniques to implement further project of inclusive theater play in cooperation with other institutions in their countries.
